What is the CO2 Capture Project?

The CO2 Capture Project (CCP) is a partnership of the world’s leading energy companies, working with academic institutions and government organisations to research and develop technologies to help make CO2 capture and geological storage (CCS) a practical reality for reducing global CO2 emissions and tackling climate change.

A cost-effective and safe way to mitigate carbon emissions

In order to establish CCS as a cost-effective, safe and viable way of mitigating CO2 emissions and its implementation on industrial scale, the CCP is taking a leading role in developing new technologies to reduce the cost of CO2 capture; providing robust, practical methods to assure geological storage security and helping to create understanding of the policy and regulatory regimes needed to stimulate its commercial development.

Supporting innovative CO2 capture and storage technology

The industry and government organisations in the CCP jointly fund and actively participate in the program; sharing and contributing their own internal technical resources, as well as engaging the world's premier technologists, scientists, economists, policy makers and academics from universities, technology companies and research institutions across the globe to investigate and develop realistic and cost-effective technical CCS solutions.

Through this international public-private collaboration, the CCP is playing a significant role in the rapid development of technology and the transfer of scientific and engineering know-how in the field.

The CCP is currently in the third of its three phases. A collection of authoritative technical findings were published by the CCP on the completion of the first phase in 2004, and on completion of the second in 2009.

Phase One:
Carbon Dioxide Capture for Storage in Deep Geologic Formations – Results from the CO2 Capture Project volume 1, (David C. Thomas) and volume 2 (Sally M. Benson).

Phase Two:
Advances in CO2 Capture and Storage Technology, Results from the CO2 Capture Project volume 3 (Lars Ingolf Eide).
